Shredded Paper
If you shred paper, then you have to dispose of the shreds.
I haven't actually made any measurements, but it seems to me that shredded
paper occupies about 100 times as much space as sheets of paper stored
flat. Here's my suggestion. Store the paper flat in a box labeled
"Paper to Shred". That way, it won't take much space to store it.
When you need to ship something or put something into a box for storage,
then shred enough paper to make packing material for the box that you're
going to use. Shredded paper doesn't seem to cushion the contents
of a box quite as well as styrofoam pellets and it's heavier than styrofoam
pellets but it's free and if you use it for packing material, then you
don't have to dispose of it. Shredded paper from a cross-cut shredder
works better than paper from a strip shredder. The main disadvantage
is that when the box is unpacked, the shredded paper makes a mess.
